Rounding rule used
Average = (Listening + Reading + Writing + Speaking) ÷ 4
If decimal < 0.25 → round down
If decimal is 0.25 to 0.74 → round to nearest .5
If decimal ≥ 0.75 → round up to next whole band
Example: an average of 6.75 rounds up to Overall Band 7.0. An average of 6.625 rounds to Overall Band 6.5, since 0.625 falls in the 0.25–0.74 range.
Frequently asked questions
How is the IELTS overall band score calculated?
It's the arithmetic mean of your four section scores, rounded using the official IELTS rounding rules shown above.
Can my overall score show as 6.25 or 6.75?
No — the official Test Report Form always shows a whole number or a half band, such as 6.0, 6.5, or 7.0. Intermediate averages are always rounded first.
